The island

Seven places to be. One of them has no name.

Every area is a painting, not a tileset — and each one has doors, games, and penguins standing around in it. The Town Square at the top of this page is one of them: coffee on one side, dinner on the other, the shop in the middle. Here is the rest of the island. Walk between them, or take the map.

On the map it's only an unnamed shimmer out on the water. Click it once and it finally gets a name — which this page isn't going to spoil.

Plus the mountain peak — and seven interiors to step inside: the aquarium, the arcade, the coffee house above, a restaurant, a lounge, a club, and the loft over the club.

The arcade

Seventeen games. Most have a door.

Twelve of them live out on the island — you walk up to the dock, the trailhead, the fort, the shore ice, the diving bell off the Shore, and go in. Four are cartridges in the Floe Arcade, the room in Aurora City: Aurora Alley, Arctic Hockey, Meltdown and Jet Pack Adventure. Meltdown is on both lists — it has a fort of its own at Snow Forts as well as a slot in the cabinet — which leaves Cavern Rescue and Igloo Fort, the two games with no way in from the world at all. The only door to them is the directory the map carries, and that will take you straight to any of the seventeen. Snowflakes you earn playing them buy hats you'll wear back outside.

Together

Other penguins are actually other people.

Waddleton is a live world. The penguins wandering past you are players, and the island is better when it's busy — though how you talk to them, and what your penguin is allowed to be called, depends on your age, which the island asks about before you arrive.

Chat and emotes

Speech bubbles over your head, a wheel of emotes, and a quick-chat list of ready-made phrases if you'd rather tap than type. Players under 13 get the phrase list only — they can't type, and typed messages from other players never reach their screen. They don't type a penguin name either: theirs comes from a list the game generates.

Friends and parties

Add someone you actually met on the island, then start a party with a six-character code and take a game on together.

Snowballs

Throwable at anyone, harmless to everyone. The island's universal greeting.

Your own igloo

Decorate it with furniture, wallpaper, and flooring you've bought — drag every piece where you want it, turn it, and change the whole room whenever you like.

Seven pets to adopt

Adopt a fluffy one, feed it, play with it. It's a gentle loop — nothing bad ever happens to your pet. (An eighth is drawn and waiting, but it's priced in Goldfish, so nobody can adopt it yet.)

Badges and levels

Eighteen badges, an XP track, a daily bonus that rewards showing up, and a weekly rotation of limited items.

Your penguin

Twenty-six colours is only the start.

A hundred and fifty-four things across the catalogue: body colours, hats, glasses, scarves, capes, vests, feet, eye styles — and the furniture, wallpaper, and flooring for your igloo.

Snowflakes ❄ are earned by playing, and buy 135 of the 154 — everything except a handful of premium pieces.
A weekly rotation brings limited items through the shop.
There's a newspaper — the Waddleton Times, out weekly, in-world.
Timed events arrive and end, and the ones you played are kept in an archive.

Games for kids have a long history of being sold as free. Here's exactly what Waddleton is.

No ads. Nothing you have to buy.

There are no advertisements in Waddleton, and nothing you need to buy to play any of it. Nearly all of the shop — 135 of the 154 items — is bought with Snowflakes you earned by playing. The other 19 are cosmetics priced in Goldfish, a premium currency, or reserved for Waddleton Club members. Both will be optional purchases when the mobile app ships; neither is buyable in the browser today. Both are purely decorative, and neither one makes a penguin faster, stronger, or higher on a leaderboard.

No sign-up needed, and no tracking.

You can play the whole game without creating anything — a guest penguin appears the moment you arrive. Signing in is optional and exists only so your penguin can follow you to another device. There are no third-party analytics and no ad networks in the game at all.

An age screen runs before the island does.

Waddleton asks the month and year you were born before you set foot on the ice. Those two numbers are never written down and never sent anywhere. What is kept is the band they put you in — child, teen or adult — saved beside your penguin on this device and carried with your penguin's record to our database, because it is what decides how chat works and what your penguin may be called. Under 13, the typing box isn't disabled — it isn't there: those players talk with a list of ready-made phrases, typed messages from other players never reach their screen, and they pick a penguin name from a generated list instead of typing one. Anything that costs money or opens a page outside the game sits behind a parental keypad, for every player.

That's the trade for not making you sign up: your progress is saved to the device and browser you're playing on. Your phone and your laptop are two different penguins, and clearing your browser data starts you over.

FAQ

Is it really free?

Yes. Every room, every mini-game and every feature is free, and there are no ads. Snowflakes are earned by playing and buy 135 of the shop's 154 items. To be exact about the rest: 15 are priced in Goldfish, a premium currency that will be purchasable when the mobile app ships, and 4 are for Waddleton Club members — an optional monthly subscription that will come with it. All 19 are cosmetic. Nothing you can buy affects a score, a leaderboard, or how well you play.

Do I have to make an account?

No. One screen asks the month and year you were born, and then you're a penguin. The month and year themselves are never stored and never sent anywhere. What is kept is the band they put you in — child, teen or adult — because that is what decides chat, what your penguin may be called, and who can reach you; it is saved on this device and it travels with your penguin's record to our database. A guest identity is created for you automatically so other players can see you moving around the island, but there's no email, no password, and nothing to sign up for.

Will my penguin follow me to another device?

Yes, if you sign in. Signing in is optional and exists for exactly this — it attaches the penguin you already have to your account so it follows you. Without it, your penguin is saved only in the browser or app you made it in, so your phone and your computer would be two separate penguins, and there's no way to recover a penguin if you clear your browser data.

Is there an iPhone or Android app?

Not yet. Waddleton isn't on the App Store or Google Play. It runs in the browser on phones and tablets, and you can add it to your home screen if you want it to feel like an app.

Is the chat safe?

Anything typed goes through one filter that the browser and the server both run, so a patched client doesn't get around it: profanity is masked, anything shaped like a phone number, an email, a link or an address is blocked outright, and leetspeak is normalised first so the obvious dodges collapse to the same word. Players under 13 don't type at all — they use a list of ready-made phrases, and they never see anyone else's typed text. Everyone can mute or block any player, and report anyone who's being a problem. To be straight with you: reports are recorded but there is no full-time moderation team reading them, so please use mute and block — they work immediately.

Are the leaderboards legit?

Yes. Fifteen of the seventeen games have a shared board; the exceptions are Lazy Floe, which has no score to beat, and Bonkberg, whose shared board isn't switched on yet. A score goes up only when you beat your own personal best, so an ordinary run won't appear, and a board that looks quiet usually is: most are new. Teens and adults post under the name they chose, so pick one you're happy being public. Players under 13 never publish a name they picked — the board is given a penguin name the game generates instead, and the score still counts. Nothing you can buy affects a score or a rank.

What do you collect about me?

Very little: the display name you chose, your penguin's appearance and progress, your scores, and — if you report someone — what you wrote in the report. No email, no real name, no location, no advertising identifiers, no analytics. The details are in the privacy policy.

Is Waddleton finished?

No, and that's the fun part. Areas, games, items, and events are still being added — the island in front of you today is smaller than the one that'll be there in a few months.
