The short version. Your notes live on your device. There is no account, no advertising, and no analytics. Companion requests to Anthropic require your permission. Optional dictation separately uses Apple Speech, and an export or share goes where you choose, as described below. Deleting a note really deletes it.
Everything you make in Loam — notes, checklists, sketches, voice-note transcripts, chat history, the Ledger of companion actions, reminders, and your settings — is stored locally in the app's storage on your device. Loam has no accounts or sign-in and does not maintain a cloud notebook. Our server processes the content you send for companion features, as described below, without storing a note library.
Loam's companion sends content to Anthropic only after you consent to waking it — it asks before its first send and names its AI provider. Manual notes remain available if you decline. Optional dictation separately uses Apple Speech as described below. After companion consent, content is sent to Anthropic only while the companion is doing something you asked for or dialed in:
Requests carry a pseudonymous device identifier (a random ID minted on your device) used only to meter daily usage and prevent abuse. It is not tied to your name, email, or any account, because none exist.
You can withdraw consent at any time. In Loam, open Powers and tap Withdraw on the Companion consent row, then choose Not now — just notes on the permission screen. New AI requests stop and pending app requests are cancelled. Re-enabling sharing does not restart an old request. Requests a provider already received remain subject to its retention terms. Pause Loam, on the row below, suspends the companion without withdrawing consent. Either way, your notes, capture, history, undo and redo keep working exactly as before.
Loam's server is a thin relay. It forwards your request to Anthropic and returns the reply. It has no database of notes, messages, or photos, and it does not log their contents. The one thing it does keep is a count of requests per device identifier, per day — a number, not your content — stored on its own disk and deleted after a few days, so that the daily allowance holds across server restarts.
The companion runs on Claude, by Anthropic. Anthropic's published API policy describes a standard retention period of up to 30 days, with exceptions for safety enforcement, legal requirements, model-specific terms and separate agreements. Its commercial API training policy excludes inputs and outputs by default, with opt-in and feedback exceptions. Loam does not train models on your notes. Read Anthropic's retention policy and training policy; we do not promise an unconditional provider deletion deadline.
Same or equal protection. Anthropic receives only the data it needs to answer your requests, under commercial API terms that limit its use of it to providing that service to us (and to abuse monitoring and legal compliance) and that require confidentiality and security. We confirm that it protects your data to the same or an equal standard as this policy describes and as Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines require. It may not sell your data or use it for advertising. Loam’s relay server runs on Fly.io, under terms that let Fly.io use hosted data only to provide and improve its hosting service; it has no right to sell that data or use it for advertising.
Voice capture uses Apple's speech recognition. Your audio is processed by Apple on your device or Apple's servers according to your iOS settings; it is never sent to Loam's server. Only the transcribed text lands in your note, on your device.
Reminders you accept are scheduled as local notifications on your device, and iOS asks your permission before the first one is scheduled. A reminder's label travels only when you ask Loam to look deeper at the note it belongs to, as described above; the notification itself never leaves your device.
Deleted means deleted. When you delete a note, it is removed from your device, its Ledger entries are redacted, and its traces are scrubbed from chat history — there is no trash folder and no thirty-day holding period, which is why Loam asks you to confirm. Our server holds none of your content, so there is nothing of yours to delete there; its per-device request counts expire on their own within a few days. Deleting local data does not recall requests Anthropic has already received; those are subject to its retention policy. If you want the on-device record gone, delete your notes in the app or delete the app itself. Backups, clipboard content, files you exported or shared, and copies saved in another app remain under your control; deleting the note does not remove those separate copies.
Your pile is yours, anytime: in Powers, Back up all notes saves one file with your notes, sketches and collections (chats and reminders stay on your device), and Copy all notes as Markdown puts your whole pile on the clipboard to paste wherever you like.
Loam is not directed at children under 13. It has no accounts and no sign-up, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
If Loam's data practices change, this policy will change in the same release, with the date above updated. Material changes will be called out in the app.
