Terms of Use
Last updated: 2026-08-24
These terms govern your use of the Alder app. By using Alder, you agree to them. Please read the sections on what Alder is not, and on emergencies — those are the ones that matter.
What Alder is — and is not
Alder is a self-help wellness app that helps you track sober time, log how you're doing, ride out difficult moments, and find your way toward real support. It is not therapy, not counseling, not treatment, not clinical care, and not a diagnosis. Using it does not create a professional relationship of any kind, with anyone. It is not a substitute for professional care, for medication, or for the people in your life.
Alder is an AI
Alder is an artificial-intelligence companion — not a therapist or a doctor, and not a stand-in for the people who support your recovery, and not a person. It is disclosed as AI in the app: a standing label sits at the top of the chat screen, and it re-states what it is as time goes on. Like any AI, it can be wrong, and it can be wrong in a way that sounds certain. Do not rely on it for medical, legal, financial, or emergency decisions.
What Alder will not do
These are enforced product limits, not aspirations:
- It gives no detox, tapering, or dosing guidance — ever, for any substance. Stopping some substances abruptly can be dangerous; that is a conversation for a medical professional.
- It does not diagnose you, score how severe your situation is, or predict whether you'll relapse.
- It does not tell you that you are cured.
- It does not encourage, permit, or glamorize use, and it will not help you obtain or conceal anything.
- It does not shame you for a lapse.
- It does not discourage professional care, medication, or meetings. Medication for opioid or alcohol use — buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone — is recovery, and Alder treats it that way.
Emergencies
Eligibility
Alder is intended for adults 18 and older and is age-gated at first launch. By using it you confirm that you are at least 18. It is offered in the United States first; the crisis resources listed in the app are US resources.
Your content
What you log stays yours. You grant us only the permission needed to operate the app for you. We do not sell or share your content, and we do not use it to advertise to you. You can export or delete it at any time — see the privacy policy.
Purchases
Alder is free to use, and there is an optional subscription called Alder Plus. Plus is US$9.99 per month or US$59.99 per year. Both are auto-renewing: they renew at the end of each period unless you turn renewal off at least 24 hours before it ends, and Apple charges your Apple Account. You can see, change, or cancel a subscription any time in Settings › your name › Subscriptions on your device; cancelling stops the next renewal and you keep Plus until the period you already paid for runs out. Prices are set per App Store region and the App Store shows your local price and currency before you buy. Plus lifts the daily limit on everyday conversation and answers with Alder's most capable model. Your counter, check-ins, urge log, milestones and the slip debrief are never paywalled.
What is never behind a payment. The SOS screen, the crisis resources, and every safety conversation — a crisis, an overdose or withdrawal concern, an active craving, or telling Alder you used — are never metered, rate-limited into silence, or placed behind Plus. That is a deliberate product rule, not a launch promotion: the 3am conversation is the reason this app exists and it is never the thing you have to pay to finish. Your sober clock, check-ins and the crisis kit are free forever.
Acceptable use
Please use Alder for your own personal, lawful self-help. Don't attempt to misuse, attack, reverse-engineer, or disrupt it; don't try to get it to produce guidance it is built to refuse; and don't use it to harm yourself or anyone else. We may limit or end access that abuses the service.
No warranty
Alder is provided "as is," for general wellness and informational purposes. We make no claim that it treats, cures, or prevents any condition, and no promise of any particular outcome — recovery is not something an app can guarantee. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the app. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations, so they may not fully apply to you.
Changes
We may update these terms. Material changes will be posted here with a new date and may be noted in the App Store update notes. Continuing to use Alder after a change means you accept it.
