A calmer way to
practice DBT skills.

Under the quiet oak live six gentle companions. Choose the one who gets to know you, remembering what you're working on between conversations. Give them a name of your own if you like. They guide your daily DBT practice, and they're right there in the hard moments too. The crisis kit is always free.

How it works

One companion, from daily practice to harder days.

Not a bot buried in a menu. The companion you choose and bond with for everyday practice is the same warm presence you can talk to when things get hard.

  1. Choose your companion

Pick one of six gentle companions, each with its own temperament. Name it, and make it yours.

  2. Practice DBT skills together

Work through guided exercises like STOP, TIPP, and paced breathing with your companion beside you — and log a one-minute diary card.

  3. They're there on the hard days too

The same companion is one tap away in chat. And the Crisis Survival Kit — 988, 741741, your local lines — is always free and works offline.

The companions

Choose the one who fits you.

Six soft nature-spirits — Willow, Sage, River, Sol, Stone, and Fern — all at home under the quiet oak, each a different way of showing up. The same companion guides your practice and stays with you in the hard moments.

Willow, a fawn
Willow
Grounding

Warm and quiet. Starts with your body — feet on the floor, one slow breath — before anything else.

Sage, an owl
Sage
Clear

Calm and plainspoken. Explains what's actually happening, so the thing stops being a mystery.

River, an otter
River
Flowing

Curious and easy to talk to. Asks before assuming — more of a conversation than a lesson.

Sol, a fox
Sol
Hopeful

Warm and low-light, never peppy. Finds the one true thing you already did, without talking you out of the hard part.

Stone, a tortoise
Stone
Steady

Unhurried and immovable. Sits with it instead of reaching for a fix, and says the least of any of them.

Fern, a rabbit
Fern
Tender

Soft and permission-giving. Takes the obligation off you first, before anything else gets discussed.

Choosing one isn’t a commitment

Switch whenever you like — every companion keeps its own history with you, so nothing is lost by trying another.

Quietoak onboarding — sharing what you're navigating, with a Wondering / Pretty sure / Diagnosed level picker
Knows you better

It learns what you're navigating.

Tell your companion as much or as little as you like about what you're navigating. It carries that as context — the words it chooses, what it already knows not to ask you twice — so you never have to start from scratch.

  • Never a label. Quietoak doesn't diagnose, treat, or assess you. Your companion holds what you share as context for how it talks with you, and always points clinical questions back to your clinician.
  • However sure you are. Mark anything you add as just wondering, pretty sure, or diagnosed — all welcome, none required, and nothing is verified or needed to use the app.
  • Yours to control. Optional and editable anytime — change or clear it whenever you like. It's kept on your device and sent along with your messages so the reply can fit you.
Talk it through

Some days, you'd rather just say it out loud.

Tap once and talk — hands-free, like a real conversation. Your companion listens and answers in a warm spoken voice, so on the nights you can't face typing, you don't have to. Switch back to text whenever you want.

  • Hands-free. Tap to talk, then just speak — no typing, no menus.
  • A voice that matches your companion. You'll hear each one's real voice when you choose — and in chat that voice is part of Plus; the on-device voice stays free for everyone.
  • Always your choice. "Type instead" is one tap away, and the crisis kit is never more than a tap from here either.

Guided audio

Your companion talks you through it.

STOP, TIPP, paced breathing and a body scan — each one recorded in your companion's own voice, so you can put the phone down, close your eyes and just follow along.

  • Their voice, not a robot. Every exercise is recorded in all six companions' voices. Bond with Stone and it's Stone who walks you through it; choose Fern and it's Fern.
  • Free — not a trial, not a teaser. Guided audio isn't part of Plus. A paying subscriber and someone who has never spent a penny hear exactly the same recordings.
  • Works with no signal. The audio lives inside the app, so a hard moment on the tube or in a hospital corridor plays the same as one at home.

What's inside

Mindfulness
Distress Tolerance
Emotion Regulation
Interpersonal Effectiveness
All four modules, with your companion to walk you through any of them.

Choose your companion

Pick the one whose temperament fits you — grounding, clear, flowing, hopeful, steady, or tender — give it a name, and it becomes a presence you actually know. Your AI guide, for daily practice and the hard days alike.

Real DBT skills

All four modules — Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness — in small, plainspoken steps, with your companion to walk you through any of them at your own pace.

A one-minute diary card

A real DBT diary card — mood, emotions, urges, and the skills you reached for — in under a minute. Tap it in or just speak it aloud, as light or detailed as you like, and look back gently over time.

Guided exercises

STOP, TIPP, paced breathing, and a body scan — guided step by step, and your companion can talk you through them out loud, in its own voice.

Crisis kit, always free

988, 741741, and your local lines — never behind a paywall, and it works offline. Some things should never be gated.

How your companion responds

It listens first — and guides when it helps.

Your companion won't push a skill every time. Often it just wants to understand — asking what's going on, validating, and giving you room to vent. When something might genuinely help, it brings a guided exercise right into the chat, never buried in a menu.

Quietoak companion chat — a Pick up where you left off list of earlier talks, ready to resume
Quietoak companion switcher — choosing which companion you need right now, each with a voice sample
It stays with you

It remembers you — and it's whoever you need.

Your talks are saved, so you never start over. Your companion carries what matters between conversations — and on a day you need something different, you can switch to another companion and pick right back up.

  • Picks up where you left off. No re-explaining yourself — it remembers the thread you were on and the skills you're working on.
  • Switch anytime. Six companions, each a little different — change who's with you whenever it fits, and hear a voice sample first.
  • Yours, on your terms. Start a fresh talk, revisit an old one, or clear it — all in a tap.
See how far you've come

The wins you'd otherwise miss.

Recovery isn't a straight line — so Quietoak counts the quiet wins. The urges you rode out, the days you showed up, the skills you reached for: gathered up and shown back to you, gently, never as a scoreboard.

  • Every urge you ride out. Feeling an urge and not acting on it is the skill working — those count here, not just the hard days.
  • A kind streak, never a guilt trip. See the days you checked in; a missed day is never framed as a broken streak.
  • Patterns over time. Your mood and urge levels show up as calm lines, with the days you reached for a skill counted alongside them, so you can see what's actually helping.
Quietoak progress — a gentle check-in streak, check-ins this month, days you practiced skills, and urges ridden out
Quietoak chain analysis — walking back through a hard moment link by link, with the spark, what made you vulnerable, and the skills that could change it
Understand a hard moment

Find the link you can change.

When something goes the way you didn't want, chain analysis walks you back through it link by link — what sparked it, what you were already carrying, and each thought, feeling and urge in between. Not to relive it. To find the one place a skill could have changed it.

  • The whole chain, in your words. The spark, what made you more vulnerable that day, then each link — a thought, a feeling, a body sensation, an urge, something you did — laid out in order.
  • Ends on a plan, not a post-mortem. Mark the skills that could change a link next time, and what you'd repair. That plan is what your companion carries into your next conversation.
  • Skip anything, keep everything. Every field is optional and nothing is graded. Your chains stay on your device and are yours to reopen, edit or delete.
  • And then your companion writes back. Finish a chain and, if you want it, the companion you chose reads it and answers — in their own voice, about your chain, naming the link you found and the skill you picked. Never automatic, never graded, and it never counts against your daily chat.

Your companion also watches each message for signs you're in danger and surfaces real help right in the chat — even if our AI is down. Common questions

FAQ

Is Quietoak therapy?

No. Quietoak is a self-help tool based on the DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) model. It is not therapy, not a diagnosis, and not a substitute for professional care. It's designed to work alongside therapy, or while you're learning the skills on your own.

Is the companion a real person?

No — your companion is an AI guide. It says so, it never claims to be a therapist or a person, and it points you toward people and professional help when that's what's needed. It's there to help you practice skills, not to be something you lean on instead of real support.

Can I talk out loud, or switch companions?

Both. You can have a hands-free voice conversation — tap to talk and your companion answers in a warm spoken voice — or stay in text; it's your choice every time. And you can switch between the six companions whenever you like. Your saved talks and what your companion remembers carry over, so you never start from scratch — and that's free. A premium, more natural voice is part of Quietoak Plus.

What if I'm in crisis?

The Crisis Survival Kit is one tap from anywhere in the app, always free, never paywalled, and works offline — 988 (call or text, US), 741741 (text HOME), and your local lines. If you're in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. Quietoak is not an emergency service.

Is my data private?

Your diary and practice are stored on your device, and we keep no diary on our servers. There's no account and no login. We don't run ads or third-party trackers against your diary or chat. To generate replies, your messages are sent to our backend and an AI provider — together with a short recap of your last 7 logged diary days, including your urge ratings and the first 120 characters of each day's note, so the reply fits your week. Your conversations are saved there — tied only to a random device ID, never your name — so your chats carry over between sessions. You can delete them anytime, and the full data flow is in our privacy policy.

What's free, and what's Plus?

The whole app is free to use: the DBT skills library, the diary card and trends, all six companions, your saved conversations, the crisis kit, and daily companion chat (5 messages a day; a message with a photo attached counts as three, because the image goes through a separate safety check first). Quietoak Plus ($9.99/month or $59.99/year) raises that to 100 messages a day, on the smartest version of them — and adds a premium companion voice (the on-device voice stays free for everyone) and a clinician-ready PDF of your diary card. Crisis support is never limited and never behind Plus.

Who is Quietoak for?

Adults (18+) who want to practice DBT skills in a calm, private space — whether you're in therapy and using it as an adjunct, on a waitlist, or learning the skills on your own.

iPad? Mac? Android?

iPhone first. It runs on iPad in iPhone-compatibility mode for now; a native iPad layout, Android, and Mac aren't committed yet.

Steady, even on the hard days.

Quietoak is coming to iOS. Leave your email and we'll let you know when it's ready — and crisis support will always be free.
