Welcome to Nightshelf. By downloading or using the app you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

License to use

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Nightshelf for your own personal, non-commercial listening and reading on devices you own or control. You may not resell, redistribute, or reverse-engineer the app.

The stories

The bundled classics are historic works supplied in editions reviewed for the app's release. Copyright terms vary by territory. Their text is included for your private use, and our thanks go to the volunteer transcribers who typed these pages back into readable form. The app also includes prepared Nightshelf Originals, written with AI for Nightshelf. Unlike the classics, they are not public-domain works; the app identifies which are free and which are included with Nightshelf Pro. The library also offers selected tales from its classic books, with access inherited from the source book. Available titles and their free or Pro access are shown in your installed version. Formats include novels, collections and retellings; More options → About this book in the player describes the source and credits, including omitted supporting material where applicable. Custom bedtime stories you conjure in the app are written by AI, for your own personal enjoyment.

Nightshelf Pro

The prepared texts are installed with the app and can be read or narrated by the on-device voice offline. The free shelf offers books and tales to try; Nightshelf Pro opens more of the library, along with AI narrators, Tonight's Story, and sleep timers longer than an hour. Tonight's Story has a daily limit — a few new stories a day, then it resets. Cloud narration needs a connection and is subject to provider availability and usage limits, including any daily allowance shared by your subscription’s devices and service-wide daily or monthly limits. In 1.9.11, if a limit or an outage interrupts your chosen AI narrator, playback pauses and keeps your place. You can retry the narrator or, while the story remains available to you, choose Use iPhone voice to continue offline. Earlier versions could switch voices and retry automatically. From 1.9.12, if a limit or an outage interrupts your chosen AI narrator, your iPhone's voice reads on from the same place, and Nightshelf keeps trying your narrator until it can continue, as described in the privacy policy. We may adjust these limits.

A current, valid offer-code subscription can use the cloud narrators, Tonight's Story and story covers across your devices after its Apple receipt is verified. These devices share the subscription's service limits. The server keeps a bounded recent-device history, described in the privacy policy; it does not impose a fixed five-device refusal.

From 1.9.11, Nightshelf Pro offers ten ElevenLabs narrators for English stories. The voice picker identifies the provider, accent and delivery. Automatic and the free English welcome use ElevenLabs Mira. Spanish, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese stories use matching voices installed on your iPhone. Earlier app versions use OpenAI narration. ElevenLabs narration of stories you made requires separate permission on this iPhone, as described in the privacy policy. The welcome, available since 1.9.3, uses ElevenLabs Mira from 1.9.11, OpenAI Mira in 1.9.10 and OpenAI Nova in earlier versions to read the first few minutes of Nightshelf's own English books once on each iPhone without Nightshelf Pro, when the voice is set to Automatic; after that the on-device voice reads on. Those minutes are measured in text, not time, so a faster reading speed makes them shorter; every paragraph sent for the welcome narrator to read counts, including the next one, which is fetched early to reduce pauses. Updating the app or changing the welcome narrator does not restart the allowance. They need a connection, they do not start or change a subscription, and Settings → AI features can turn AI narrators off.

Nightshelf Pro is a recurring, auto-renewing subscription billed monthly or annually through your Apple Account. Where offered, the annual plan includes a 7-day free trial that converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel before the trial ends; the trial is shown only when your Apple Account is eligible.

Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel anytime — and turn off auto-renewal — in Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops future charges; access continues until the end of the current billing period. Refund requests are handled by Apple under Apple's policies; Nightshelf does not issue refunds directly.

Availability & changes

We may update, change, or discontinue features at any time. Cloud narration and story writing depend on network services and may occasionally be unavailable; an on-device voice remains available to choose when they are. We aim to keep Nightshelf running smoothly but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability.
